The Last Bastion of Freedom - Life inside America's largest national park

January 5, 2021

It took over 9 years to shoot, edit, and release this film
about McCarthy and the people who live inside Wrangell/St. Elias National Park. That’s kind of how it works when you are working on a passion project with no budget. Living a dream.

Back in 1998, when I was in college, I was hiking with friends along the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. A passing hiker told me about the most amazing and beautiful trail he had ever hiked. It was then that I decided that someday I would make a documentary about the John Muir Trail. In 2008, I got together with Cirque Productions in Chapel Hill, NC. They said they had a group of high school students that were getting ready to take the 218 mile journey through the Sierras. High Sierra premiered at the 2011 Wild and Scenic Film Festival in Nevada City, CA. It won "Best Documentary" at the 2012 Cape Fear Independent Film Festival in Wilmington, NC, as well as the 2011 Sierra Nevada Award from the the Mountain Film Awards in Mammoth, California. It also screened at the 2011 Anchorage International Film Festival and is now available online and on Blu-ray at www.highsierradoc.com
